Sivaji (played by Rajnikanth) is a rich NRI software profession who comes to India. He is the son of caring parents (played by Manivannan and Vadivukkarasi), and the nephew of an ever helpful uncle (played by Vivek). Sivaji dreams of running a universities and hospitals in India for the benefit of the poor.
Sivaji and Adikesava Reddy (played by Suman) become rivals. Adikesava is a local educationist and a hospital owner who sucks the poor and is mad for money. Adikesava continues to influence even the Government to stop activities of Sivaji.
Sivaji falls in love with Umadevi (played Shriya), who is the daughter of uncompromising parents (played by Raja and Uma Padmanabhan). Sivaji, with the aid of his uncle, goes out of the way to court the girl and her family. Umadevi, despite the fear engendered after a fortuneteller predicts calamity for Sivaji, marries him.
Adikesava continues his evil moves to ensure that Sivaji loses all his wealth. Sivaji finally becomes left with nothing at which instance Adikesava tosses a one rupee coin implying Sivaji is a beggar.
Sivaji becomes as strong as a roaring lion and vows to use the same one rupee coin as the 'investment' to take not just Adikesava, but all the money sharks. Rooting out black money is his broad and dramatic theme. Along with his uncle, Sivaji plays smart, but under the law tricks, to shatter the wits of the villainous group.
He unearths all the black money out of the evil hands, ingenious and inventive and manages to build his dream projects. Adikesava and the other baddies hits back and plan to get Umadevi. They even kill him when he is in the custody of the police. His voice-recognition locked personal laptop however doesn't open up. The CID engages mimicry artists to use the voice of Shivaji and open the laptop but fails. Shivaji resurfaces as NT Ranaga Rao saying he is the NRI who funded for the Shivaji University. Ranga Rao arrives at the inauguration function in a helicopter, gives a speech, shows his identity and surprises the police. The rest of the story is about how the hero comes out and ends the baddies.
